General Leonard Fulton Ross papers, 1834-1888.

Papers of Leonard Fulton Ross, an attorney, probate judge, and county clerk from Lewiston, Illinois. Ross was also a Civil War Brigadier General in the Seventeenth Regiment Illinois Volunteers. The collection consists of over 820 items, mostly letters to General Ross. Most of the letters relate to real estate matters as would be handled in his capacity as an attorney. Other materials relate to the Civil War, including the situation in Memphis Tennessee during the war, looking for family following the Chicago fire, a reference to Uncle Sam, the Peoria & Hannibal Railroad, and some letters of a more personal nature. There is also a copy of his biography from the book, the History of Fulton County.

Leonard Fulton Ross (1823-1901), Union general. He raised the 17th Regiment of Illinois Infantry, and was commissioned Colonel in May of 1861, leading it in Kentucky and Missouri. He commanded 3rd Brigade, 1st Division of the Army of Tennessee. On Apr. 25, 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General of U.S Volunteers. Ross commanded the 2nd Division of the District of Corinth, 8th Division, Left Wing and 13th Division of the XIII Corps. He resigned on July 22, 1863, and later was active in the Repub...
